Fourteen

They spent the next few days training, as careful not to overdo it as they were careful to avoid Elissa’s family, which they were successful at doing until her twin nephews spotted her walking past the pool to the beach and decided to pull her into the water. Sitting in a lounger, Stefan looked up from his tablet. She could feel him glaring at her through his shades. A quick glance around and she spotted her sister-in-law in conversation with her mom at a table under an umbrella, both studiously ignoring her. So she dunked her nephews a few times, noogied both of them, then got the hell out of there before her dad could shout something embarrassing.

The other two people they tried to avoid—and had been successful at it so far—were Brett and his new partner. By now, several competitors from the mainland and a few different countries had checked in. They recognized each other by their sports gear and from being up at ungodly early hours at the resort, then later training on one course or another. But so far, they hadn’t run into Brett on land, at sea, or on a bike. They didn’t show up at the cocktail party either, for which Elissa was both grateful and annoyed, since she’d spent the entire time coiled up and ready for their insults.

Despite the lowered risk of Elissa getting targeted, Nash still made sure to establish and maintain a safe perimeter around her during the party. Even as she talked to other racers, his eyes shifted from her to every entrance and exit, and he made sure to ask and note the names of every person who spoke to her.

“But I’m safe!” Elissa protested after he’d maneuvered her away from a particularly interesting woman from Ireland who asked if they wanted to train together the next day. “Gina told you just last night that she and her team have it under control, right?” Nash had been on the phone with Gina for close to an hour, and still came away with the barest of details but an abundance of reassurances that Elissa’s identity remained protected and that they shouldn’t worry on their ‘free vacation’ as she’d put it. Elissa had been taking an active part in her own protection as well, grilling Nash on how to spot a threat, and she never caught anyone she thought was suspicious. The hair on the back of her neck never stood up and she never had the feeling of being watched like she did in Los Angeles—ironically whenever someone from Team Watchdog was following her.

“I’m not taking any chances with you,” he said. Then softened his verdict with an extensive make-out session in a hammock on their lanai later. She found it impossible to argue with someone whose tongue was flicking at warp speed across her clit.

But they couldn’t avoid Brett forever. There was the mandatory ‘informational luau’ in Lahaina a couple days later where they’d pick up race numbers, swag, and receive instructions on rules, procedures, and regulations.
